Introduction
The NLP Communication Model provides a fascinating insight into how our minds process information and create our subjective experience of reality. At its core, the model explains how external events are filtered through our senses and mental processes to create our internal representations, which in turn shape our behaviors and outcomes.
The Filtering Process: Deletion, Distortion, and Generalization
Imagine for a moment that you are experiencing an external event. This event enters your neurology through your senses and encounters various filters, including deletion, distortion, and generalization. These filters determine which aspects of the event are allowed to pass through to your conscious awareness.
Creating Internal Representations (IR)
Once the event has been filtered, you create an internal representation (IR) of it. This IR is composed of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, and gustatory elements (VAKOG), which represent the pictures, sounds, feelings, smells, and tastes associated with the event. These elements combine to form your subjective experience of the event.
The Power of Internal Dialogue
Your internal dialogue, the words you use to label your experience, constitutes suggestions that you give to your unconscious mind. This means that the way you interpret and label your experiences can influence your unconscious mind and, consequently, your behaviors and outcomes.
Information Processing and Chunking
Our capacity to process information is limited. While we receive around 2 million bits of information per second through our senses, our brain is only capable of processing about 134 bits per second. To cope with this overload, our brain tends to chunk information into manageable units, which allows us to organize and make sense of the information we receive.
Perception is Projection
The concept of "perception is projection" suggests that our perceptions of reality are projections of our internal representations. How we perceive the world around us is influenced by our internal beliefs, attitudes, and filters.
Conclusion
Understanding the NLP Communication Model can help us become more aware of how we create our reality and how we can change it. By learning to recognize and change our internal representations, we can transform our perceptions and ultimately, our lives.
