Reading the Unspoken: Decoding Skin Tonus, Breathing and Nonverbal Cues in NLP

Beyond Words

Developing your sensory acuity is a skill that can greatly enhance your ability to understand and connect with others. It involves paying close attention to subtle cues in people's behavior and physiology, such as changes in skin tonus or color, breathing patterns, lower lip size, and eye movements. These cues can provide valuable insights into a person's emotional state, thoughts, and intentions.

  1. Skin Tonus/Color: Rather than looking for redness or whiteness, calibrate from light to dark. Imagine the person in a black and white photo and notice if the picture gets lighter or darker. Pay attention to the shine on the skin, as symmetrical vs. asymmetrical tonus can also convey meaning. Additionally, someone may blush or pale in response to certain stimuli, indicating embarrassment or fear. By calibrating these changes from light to dark, you can develop a better understanding of how people react to different situations.

  2. Breathing: Observe changes in breathing rate and location. Breathing can be high (around the shoulders), middle (around the rib cage), or low (in the belly). Kinesthetic people often breathe slowly and deeply, while auditory people may breathe more moderately. Breathing patterns also offer important clues about a person's internal state. Pay attention to the rate and location of their breath. High, shallow breathing may indicate stress or anxiety, while deep, diaphragmatic breathing often suggests relaxation or focus.

  3. Lower Lip Size: The lower lip changes size due to changes in blood flow. As it becomes engorged with blood, there are fewer lines, and as it shrinks, there are more lines. The size of the lower lip can also be a revealing indicator. Changes in lower lip size, caused by variations in blood flow, can reflect shifts in emotional arousal. A fuller lower lip with fewer lines may indicate relaxation, while a thinner lower lip with more lines could suggest tension or stress. Check the lines and thickness of the lower lip from up to down to observe these changes.

  4. Eyes: Notice changes in eye focus and pupil dilation. Eyes can become focused or de-focused, and pupils can dilate or un-dilate. This can provide insights into a person's mental state and focus of attention. observe the eyes, as they are often referred to as the windows to the soul. Changes in eye focus and pupil dilation can reveal a person's level of interest, engagement, or emotional arousal. Dilated pupils, for example, are often associated with excitement or attraction, while constricted pupils can indicate stress or discomfort.

  5. Practice Exercise: Before attending a training or workshop, practice observing people's skin color/tonus, breathing, lower lip size, and eyes. Look for these changes in people you interact with throughout the day to sharpen your observation skills.

Developing your sensory acuity takes practice, but by actively observing these cues in others, you can become more attuned to their emotional states and enhance your ability to communicate effectively.
